I heard there is a muzzy can that is not as loud as the regular. If so does anybody know if it is more restictive than the regular, and if so how much quieter is it? Reason asking is the wife says it is to loude when she is on back

I'm sure you could get the actual specifications just by calling Muzzy...

However my testing (ZRX1100 w/"full" stage III kit) with both the "quiet" & "loud" baffles revealed the following:

~8-10 hp difference
~3-4 ft. lbs. torque diff.
You must re-jet if swapping (I do) between the two cans
A 99' ZRX1100 w/cams MUST have the "loud" can to get the flow/hp
HUGE noise difference (I think your wife will like the "Quiet" baffle)
I like the "tone" of the quiet pipe
Less tickets

IMHO...FWIW

I have a full SS with round can, I could give you some db readins from my sound meter if you want, tell me what RPM's and how far away...

132Db, WFO, 12ft directly behind the bike :)

Why doesn't it surprise me that Rick would have these numbers in his back pocket? :stpoke:

I recently removed the cone inside the baffle. I didn't expect that much of a difference, man is it considerably louder! It sounds better though, throatier. The kicker is it seems to have helped with that little bit of softness around 2000rpm with the ZX cams. I was expecting, if anything, to loose some torque down low.

DaddyDave noted 8-10 HP down with the quiet can but I assumed he was referring to a bike with open intake (sdtage III) and possibly cams. I have heard from Muzzy that the midrange torque is slightly better with the quiet can but peak horsepower is down very slightly. Peak HP at one high RPM is nowhere near as important to me as the the overall torque curve

So what I want to know is

"With stock cams and air box what is the torque comparison throughout the rev range between a Muzzy full system with normal cannister and the quiet cannister?"

and

" Does using the quiet cannister change the jetting requirements from the regular cannister?"

Anybody in the know???????

Lou, I have the Muzzy SS round aluminum can with the "quiet" baffle.

According to Muzzy you lose 2-3 Hp on top
and gain 1-2 ft lbs. of torque.

I do not know about the jetting but it stands to reason there
would be "slight" differences.

The tone is not objectionable if you are easy on the
gas around town.

I seriously doubt you would lose 8-10 Hp.

If you would like to swap me end cans once the
riding season is over in Ohio, contact me and I would
willing to do that (Mine is in perfect shape).

Cheers,

Greg

Greg: Thanks for the offer. I have yet to purchase a Muzzy (partly because of this quiet can issue). Can I gather from your response that you are satisfied with quiet can and do not find that it has muted your bike too much???

Lou, No problem.

I have heard a lot of the aftermarket exhausts
(Except for the Rick61 style "baffle-less megaphone of doom")and they all sounds pretty good to me.

No, I do not believe it kills the sound of the bike at all. However, when you get on it hard it will get loud.

You may also want to look into the Akrapovic as I understand they are pretty quiet.

When all I had on my '99 was the Muzzy pipe and
a dynojet stage one kit (stock filter)
it made 105 HP.

Now I have a J.E. 1080 big bore kit,
ZX-11 cams, FP stage 2.5 jet kit, and
some minor port clean up and it makes 137.6 HP
with this pipe.

Good luck with your mods,

Greg

I have the loss documented from our pipe testing in 00' when we were switching between the different pipes (Tsukigi/Muzzys.) The difference (on my bike) using Muzzys "loud/quiet" Baffles is 133.8hp vs. 127.1hp. Ok, it was 6.7hp to be exact; perhaps I was exaggerating a bit for speed of response. Some of the difference could have been conditions on that day, temp/air density, etc.

FYI, the highest number I got on the bike was 135.1 using the Tsukigi "Competition 103db" baffle, & the "Street 92db" baffle was 128.7. So the difference between loud & quiet baffles is quite pronounced. Of the two pipes, the quietest was the Tsukigi 92db baffle. The Muzzys "quiet" baffle didn't "seem" all that quiet compared to the "standard" baffle to me; so I ran the standard for quite some time until I got a fixit ticket from the CHP. By that time I was sick of the noise on long freeway drones anyway.

I like loud, good sounding pipes (especially on the racetrack), but without earplugs it can get annoying (to me); & the cops around here won't put up with it. You'll get a fixit ticket fairly quickly; while they ignore the loud HD's....

See Dave, I told you it wasn't 8-10 Hp...LOL.

Actually I am VERY surprised it's anything more than 3-4 hp but I will believe 6 hp because KREXKEN was getting 143 hp out of a very similar setup to mine.

(That and you have the dyno runs to prove it).

Heck, if I can get ANOTHER 6 hp......

Bring on the noise!!!

Sooo...Anybody want to trade Muzzy end cans???
:D

I just need a set of pistons & a head clean-up like you... :uptosum:
