A LEO friend of mine once told me, "it's only illegal if you get caught." He then tromped the go juice peddle in his newly aquired IROC Camaro and promptly buried the speedo needle. 160 if I recall.
This was on a closed circut with a professional driver. (well maybe it was a remote country road but I don't have any memory of the incident.) Don't try this at home.
HEhehe. . . :jest:
Hypothetically, if I had ever broken a speed law, well... lets see now... 30 years of riding, at least once per ride, average of 3 rides per week, nine months of riding per year 108, 3240 rides in a life time. . . oh and that does not count rides after water hole stops. Cut that number in half for a few years off riding. So, Yeah I may have broken into triple digits a time or two. Hypothetically speaking but I don't recall that incident.

I dodged a bullet last Friday. I was returning home from a client in Phoenix around 7:30PM. I was wb on I-10 in the HOV lane approaching the “Deck Park Tunnel”. This is a 10 lane tunnel, under a park near downtown Phoenix. It is about a ¼ mile long and well lit.
I was running about 70 and most cars were passing me. I normally don’t speed in town, but… The HOV lane thru the tunnel was empty, cars were passing me, so I figured if DPS was near they would be chasing the cars going 80 past me.
I twisted the throttle slightly and quickly accelerated to triple digits. When I reached the end of the tunnel I shut down the throttle and quickly decelerated to the legal speed, 65.
A moment later I caught a glimpse of the flashing lights in my mirror, about a ¼ mile back. I signaled immediately and pulled over to the right shoulder. The officer followed and exited his car quickly. He approached and demanded to know where I was going in such a hurry. I told him I was headed home.
He told me I was going well over 100 MPH and that I had committed a criminal violation. In AZ anything 25 or more over the posted limit is criminal, not civil. This also means I am subject to arrest, instead of being cited and released with a ticket.
I told him I was definitely going too fast, but that I wasn’t sure I had hit 100. He asked how fast I was going. I again said I was going fast, but that I wasn’t sure how fast.
I was trying hard to be contrite without making specific admissions of guilt. My best chance of not being booked is to show remorse and to be as cooperative as possible.
At this point he asked for my license, registration and proof of insurance. I told him I had to remove my seat to get my registration and insurance info. After getting his permission to do this, I took my time and used the time to engage him in conversation.
I told him I knew it didn’t matter, but I wanted him to know that I was a former police officer and had spent 6 years as a motor officer and that this LESSON would not be lost on me. He replied that I should know better. I told him he was right and that I was just an idiot.
After a moment, he told me that he might consider writing me a civil violation. I told him that I didn’t want him to do anything that might jeopardize his integrity. I understood that he has a job to do and I didn’t hold any ill-will towards him for doing whatever he felt was necessary. He took my info and went back to his car.
I was ecstatic. I’d just gone from jail to ticket! What could possibly be better? A moment later he was back at my bike. He shoved my license and registration at me and said he had an emergency call. He yelled “Slow down” as he ran back o his car. He jumped in and drove off.
I was rattled enough that I couldn’t find my ignition key. It was still in the seat lock on the side of my bike, but it took me several minutes to regain my wits and remember it was there.
I live in an area outside Phoenix which is still agricultural so I’m able to indulge my need for speed on roads with minimal traffic. By the time I reach the Interstate and traffic, it is easy to slow down and drive defensively. I obviously broke my own rule about driving in traffic, not to mention the law.
I’m also lucky that the officer never had a chance to pace me. Had I decided to fight a citation he might have had a hard time establishing my speed. If I had not been apologetic when he stopped me, there’s no doubt he would have booked me. Being an ex-officer helped, but being contrite and polite is the real key to getting a break. The tricky part is doing that, without admitting too much. Most statements made during a traffic stop are fully admissible. So if you don’t get a break, your admissions can be used against you. There is a world of difference between “Yes, I was doing 100.”; and “Your right, I was going too fast.”

Quig - You are absolutely correct, be contrite, pull over right away and never say how fast you were actually going. I usually say, "I was looking at the road not the speedometer." I've gotten 3 warnings in the last 5 years and no tickets. Of course, you did have the 'professional courtesy' thing going your way.
The last time, the officer asked me "Do you know why I stopped you?" I thought to myself, let's see: speeding, reckless driving, weaving in and out of lanes, not signalling. But I didn't say anything, Then he answered his own question - You were going 65 in a 40 (Good thing I was on the SV650 cause if I was on the REX I woulda been up to 90). Then he gave me a mini lecture on m/c traffic fatalities and he got one of those mysterious emergency calls and left.

my last ride before putting the bike away was a spirited one, i was using everybit of the 1200 seeing how it was probably last ride of the season.
i looked down and saw 130+ and thought to myself that the highway was a little too empty of leo's for as nice of weather it was so late in the season, so i slowed to 80 in a sweeping left where i couldnt see around the bend that opens up to a straight with a bridge where leos park and clock, well, dontcha know, there was one there under the bridge, so i looked down and saw 80 and was glad i wasnt doing 130+
maybe 80 was close enough to 65?(maybe it was really 72 actual) maybe wearing proper gear, dunno, but whew i was glad i slowed down

On I10 coming back from Bike Week (empty long straight road) I once saw 165 indicated....
Just a nice slow 5th gear rollon. My buddy on his FZ1 paced me for about 10 seconds at top whack. Love to know what that really was. We both saw between 160 and 165 the whole time.
Hit the triples most rides at some point around my home. I'm near a bunch of freeways and know most of the speed traps. Do average either a ticket or warning a year though (about 50\50 chance it seems like). When you can hit 120 by the end of the ramp it's hard not to whack it.
Last ticket I was on a surface street that commonly does 60mph although it's a 45. Got nailed for 62 MPH by a new city's traffic enforcement unit in a new spot! Dirty B@$$@^%$!

Most of teh rest of the day was pretty mellow and the roads were of a slower vareity.

guilty every now and then but I ride with my girl most the time and if anything ever happend to her cause I was being silly with my right hand I'd just die.
that said, freeways in so-cal move at 85 to 90, a strong pass requires 110 or so. I do make it into the tripples pretty regularly but not quite how you mean it. Besides, the thing I like most about the REX is the crazy midrange and that roll-on-from-idle thing they do so well.
the occasional 140 backroads pass is purely accidental:grin:

100 mph (indicated) once in the 2 1/2 years I've owned her. Most of the time I like to cruise between 60 - 70 mph on the back roads. I know there's a lot of motor available but I left the "need for speed" concept behind years ago. I enjoy this bike because its comfortable and retro. I love the motor because of its ability to take me down the road effortlessly. I just don't have it in me any more to ride at "high risk" speeds. Not at this point in my life.

Twenty eight vehicles impounded in the first 24 hours :nonono:
They've got a bill in the Legislature here like that. Except is applies ONLY to Motocrcycles.:clint: :snipe: :peashtr:

I am reluctant to be the buzzkiller or "nitpicker" here, but even my revered ZRXOA brethren must be snapped back to reality when they stray too far into the :bs zone.
Do you, who claim 15Osomething or other, or 161,2 3,4... mph "indicated" really have enough calm air, time to take your eyes off the road, or poor judgement at that kind of speed to check your speedo THAT well? :stpoke:
I"ve hit 130-135-ish a few times but no time at that speed to seriously check for a third digit. Just a quick glance to see I'm somewhere around or past 2 o'clock. Things happen way too fast at that speed to not be looking WAY down the road.
I guess you probably could peg a number. Just sounds kinda corney unless you have a digital speedo, IMHO.
Just really lucky people with really great tucks, getting REALLY LUCKY playing Russian Roulette.
We lose guys constantly here in Vegas due to too much speed. Another one last night just down the street :( I hear them nightly on Decatur behind my house. Always waiting to hear that horrible sound.:nonono:
Be Safe Guys. Those "miss you" and "get well" and "let's get a bank account set up for so and so" threads are not fun to read.

Yep... long straights out in BFE... and just cause you havent done it, doesnt mean it's BS.
Poor judgement??? That's pretty relative. I'd worry more about riders chosing bad lines in the twisties and over cooking turns, than guys checking gauges on top end runs.

like trying to get past those semis goin 45 in a 65?
Yea, I, uh, dropped 'er down to 2nd (oops) and pegged it, OOPS, all I know is that I saw the speedo and tach go whoosh to the big end reaaal fast.
( insert YEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAW here:uptosum: )
Hit third gear( more like hit the rev limiter, then shifted, 'casue I thought I was in 2nd, and didn't realize how far I had it revved up), glanced at the speedo, somewhere in the neighborhood of 120, and promptly shut it down. I only MEANT to do 90ish, but then again, I should've only gone to 3rd, not 2nd,:slap: lotta giddyup there:ytrap:
Nothing like a little adrenalin to getcha goin:knock:

I regularly top 130 during my comute to work, but I don't pay much attention to the speedo when doing it. Max speed for the trip shows on my GPS and it generally shows 130-145.
:offtopic: I exceeded the posted speed limit here yesterday by 20 mph. I was doing 55:nonono: Man I miss my bike:cry:

I don't go as fast as I used to go; my GPS is more accurate (reads lower) than my speedo.
